Charterhouse of Valldemossa. What will you visit?
The Carthusian Monastery of Valldemossa is a monumental site, located just 20' away from Palma.
You will get to visit the old palace of a king, dating back to 1309; a beautiful church with frescos of Bayeu, the brother in law of Goya; a beautiful long white-arched corridor leading to different cells that the monks inhabited for 400 years to find peace and rest; beautiful gardens and terraces with some of the most astonishing views to the valley; an old pharmacy with ancient pots and medicines still in it; The visit to the well-known cell No. 2; an art collection of some of the greatest modern Spanish and local artists, including Miró, who found also inspiration in this part of the island; and yet you will get to explore another incredible collection of the archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria, cousin of Empress Sissi, who actually came here to Majorca with his steam ship and felt absolutely in love with this part of the island. The piano recitals (15 minutes) included in the ticket will take place at 11:00, 11:45, 12:30, 13:00, 13:45
Give yourself an hour or two to wander around the building and grounds. Quite a bit of history, both religious and artistic in this place in the lovely hill top town of Valldemossa. You may even get a piano concert while visiting! Hint: there is parking available on the main street coming into Valldemossa.
Interesting visit to get to know the Monastery where you can feel the ambience that Ruben Darío, Azorin, Chopin and George Sand among others, could live in.
